“Public History Practicum” with Kathy Franz, Spring 2010.
For our Public History Practicum project, my colleagues James Nelson, Jordan Grant, Kelly Gannon, and I worked with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and the Lemelson Center for the Study of Innovation and Invention to produce museum theater scripts interpreting the lives of women inventors that incorporate the Lemelson Center’s mission: “Invention is a process and anyone can be inventive.” Working alongside the university’s Theater department, we conducted the research, historical interpretation, and writing of the script to create a product that we hope is engaging and informative to museum visitors of all ages. This practicum taught us about the differences between writing for academic and general audiences, and illustrated the possibilities for a successful cross-institutional project.
